You Hidden Powers in a Corporate Community
Wednesday, December 07, 2005
Now more than ever the role the role of a corporation and its’ staff is evaluated on what
value can be added to the community. For ISTCL, being a ‘Good Corporate Citizen’ means
active involvement in the community. As a corporation made up of individuals ISTCL
believes the whole is greater than the sum of the parts combined. We can, and will make a
difference by acting locally.
ISTCL has a two layer approach. Giving what we can and socially responsible buying
practices. The power and results of this two layer approach is highly satisfying to ISTCL
and our employees.
THE POWER OF GIVING
Making a difference is what brought ISTCL to the Homes First Foundation. Through web site
development, participation in fund raising campaigns and helping match people with skills
and resources to support the ‘charitable supply chain’, ISTCL helps to make a difference
everyday.
Individually, all ISTCL employees are encouraged to participate in some form of charitable
or philanthropic activity or another. Though not always possible at all times, 40% of
ISTCL staff are, at anyone time involved in charitable volunteer activities in one form or
another in their own time, and the corporation offers tremendous flexibility to accommodate
these activities.
THE POWER OF BUYING
The Toronto Social Purchasing Portal is another example of how ISTCL is working at the
business level to support community activities. Although not directly involved in the
initiative ISTCL endeavours to purchase supplies through this highly beneficial program.
Our use of A-Way Courier Service in the Toronto area supports is yet another example.
Since 1987, this competitive courier service, founded and staffed by survivors of mental
health challenges, stands as a model of business acumen and a tribute to the power of
community.
Whether Business to Business support or Business to Consumer support – you can make a
difference today.
WHATS NEXT
Food, Clothing and Shelter: ISTCL supports multiple initiatives under these three
categories.
Today focusing on ‘Shelter’, ISTCL in partnership with Social Housing Services Corporation
(SHSC) announced the launch of the 2005 Secret Santa Shelter Campaign ( www.istcl.com/secretsanta ) in support of the
Homes First Foundation. This campaign is designed to replace anonymous dollar store gag
gifts and wasteful spending during the holidays by giving to the person who has everything
something that benefits the person with nothing.
This individually focused campaign allows corporate community’s an alternative to wasteful
spending of money leading up to the holidays. Individuals or groups of individuals such as
the lottery pool, survivor pool or even hockey pools can donate a portion of their
collections to the Secret Santa Shelter Campaign
This year it is easy to ensure that someone with nothing comes out a winner.
